Our Story
Started by Accident. Built with Purpose.
In 2003, founder Brizboy accidentally discovered that his bristlenose pleco, Pebbles, had developed a preference for walking across his kitchen tiles rather than swimming. After filming a 4-minute video that received 3 million views on an early internet forum, he realised there was an untapped market.
PlecoTrekโข launched in a converted aquarium van in Portland, Oregon, with three trained plecos and a dream. Today, we operate across 6 continents with a roster of 52 individually certified ambulatory plecos and a team of 60 dedicated specialists.
We remain the only pleco rental agency in the world with full BEOH (Bureau of Exotic & Outstanding Herpetoichthyology) certification. Every pleco in our care is treated with the dignity, hydration, and gentle encouragement they deserve.

PlecoTrekโข founded by Brizboy in Portland, OR. First rentals begin with Pebbles, Barnacle Sr., and Slab I.

Everything you need to know before renting a land-walking pleco
Are the plecos safe to be around? โผ
Absolutely. Our plecos are non-venomous, non-aggressive, and certified by BEOH for terrestrial public events. They are placid by nature and move slowly enough that no guest has ever been caught off guard. The suction cups are not a safety concern unless you're a smooth vertical surface, in which case they may briefly adhere to you.
Do I need any experience with plecos? โผ
Not at all. Every rental includes at least one certified Pleco Handler who will be present throughout the event. They manage humidity, feeding, terrestrial navigation support, and any special requests. You simply enjoy the companionship. Our handlers are trained in both freshwater ichthyology and event hospitality โ a rare combination we are very proud of.
How far in advance do I need to book? โผ
We recommend booking at least 7โ10 days in advance, especially for weekend and holiday events. Same-day and 48-hour rush bookings are available in most major cities worldwide for a 15% surcharge. Popular plecos like Captain Suction and Duke Bristlenose book out weeks in advance โ plan accordingly if you have a specific pleco in mind.
Can I take the pleco to a public place? โผ
Yes, with conditions. Public appearances are permitted in outdoor spaces, gardens, private event venues, and select commercial locations. We provide a full list of approved venue types in your rental agreement. Our handler will accompany you for all public appearances. We do not permit plecos in indoor food service environments, swimming pools, or anywhere with excessive direct sunlight without prior shade arrangements.
What do I need to provide for the pleco? โผ
Very little. We bring all equipment including the portable humidity system, algae wafers, rest habitat, and any event accessories. We ask that you have a shaded outdoor area or a cool indoor space available for rest periods, and that guests are briefed not to pick up the pleco without handler assistance. A full preparation checklist is sent upon booking confirmation.
What is your cancellation policy? โผ
Full refund if cancelled 72+ hours before your rental. 50% refund within 48 hours. No refund within 24 hours, though we are happy to reschedule. We understand plans change โ and frankly, so do our plecos. They're very adaptable. Within reason.
